Horizons Residential Care Center has been a part of the Winston-Salem, Rural Hall, and greater Forsyth County area, since 1973 when the Junior League of Winston-Salem chartered the first Horizons home for children living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and extensive support needs. The Horizons Board of Directors, led by Mrs. Will P. Hanes, sought to bring meaningful residential services to Forsyth county and succeeded in doing so. Horizons has grown and changed in many ways since that initial charter was established, welcoming the Atrium home in 1989 and the Arches home in 1992. Recently we lauched the Horizons Housing Initiative to build new smaller and more homelike environments for our residents. You can learn more here. The first two of six planned homes were completed and during the summer of 2026, the residents from the Arches moved into them. The Arches building will be sold to raise funds needed to complete the building of the new homes. We are honored to continue advancing our Horizons Mission of serving people with higher medical acuity, and facilitating supports to live a desirable life.
