On Tuesday 4/21, a small reception of donors and supporters of Horizons Residential Care Center was held at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem to officially kick-off the Hope on the Horizons Capital Campaign. Several members of the SECU Foundation attended to present the organization with a check for $1.5 million to be used as a matching grant for gifts to the campaign. This campaign will raise the necessary funds to complete the Horizons Housing Initiative.
The program included heartfelt comments from Pat and Nancy Grantham, co-chairs of the campaign, whose daughter, Anne Stuart, was a longtime resident at Horizons. Richard Anderson, President/CEO of Horizons, also spoke about the need for this building project. He reported that the first phase is complete and the first 12 residents will be moving into their new homes in the next two weeks or so. He then thanked all those who have made the completion of the first phase of the project a reality. He also recognized Mary Ellen Haley, who was in attendance, as one of the founders of Horizons in 1973.
The program ended with a presentation by SECU Foundation Board member, Michael Clements, in which he shared the news that in its most recent grantmaking session, the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation Board of Directors approved more than $9 million in funding for 23 non-profit organizations throughout North Carolina including a $1.5 million challenge grant to Horizons Residential Care Center to support the expansion of their campus for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities needing residential treatment.
He explained that these commitments will support local and community development initiatives in areas of housing, education, healthcare, and human services and reflect the Foundation’s ongoing dedication to identifying and addressing statewide needs, bringing its total giving since 2004 to more than $340 million. He said that the Foundation is honored to support their efforts and help strengthen the vital programs and projects that expand much-needed opportunities for our neighbors. He said that they are grateful to the SECU members whose generosity makes it possible for the Foundation to put dollars back into our communities through their monthly contributions.
He then invited others to join SECU in support of this building project as it enters its next phase, and then presented the check.
